Around the World in 21 Days-Part 25

A great Thai restaurant on the grounds of the Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay - Baan Bua

There are four restaurants at the Fours Seasons Bali, with a fifth opening in December. This one, called Baan Bua is Thai.

Cooking School at the Four Seasons Bali in

Jimbaran Bay

Bali is an island province in the country of Indonesia. With a population of almost 4 million, the island is home to most of Indonesia's Hindu minority.

Bali is the largest tourist destination in the country and is renowned for its highly developed arts, including traditional and modern dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking, and music. The expedition today featured a tour of the island with stops at a temple, a local school, rice paddies and more. Clearly, it was going to be both fun and educational, but the Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay is so gorgeous that I couldn't bear to leave. So Sharon and I chose to remain at the resort and take advantage of it's cooking school.

We started the day with a trip to the local fish and vegetable market. The colors and smells of the market were wonderfully vivid and fresh. We then headed back to the resort and it's impressive cooking classroom.

Ironically, the class featured Italian cooking, as opposed to Balinese or Indonesian fare. However, we were game for anything and managed to produce a fresh tomato sauce, risotto with mushrooms, Madeira prawn-filled dumplings, grilled tiger prawns and salad. We learned a lot, had a lot of laughs, and ended the class with empty plates, a graduation certificate, and an apron to boot!
